Mazuli is not yet Mazuli. They are a Guest looking around the Living Room (#17). Mazuli, like many before them, first heard of LambdaMOO through A Rape in Cyberspace, an infamous 1991 article by Julian Dibbell that brought, and continues to bring, notoriety to the MOO. The rape in question occurred in a specific part of cyberspace-- the LambdaMOO living room-- and now Mazuli is standing in it, so to speak, feeling that they are in place of great historical significance. Mazuli will later discover that feminist scholars and longtime MOOers are not very fond of Dibbell or his reporting on LambdaMOO. This is unsurprising, but Mazuli feels intrigued by Dibbell's florid descriptions of MOOing: connecting “with what seemed a warm electric thud", shape-shifting "by the digital moonlight", the "buzzing, dissonant gap" between RL and the "strange, ethereal universe" of virtual reality. Mazuli senses that in order to experience this, they should make a character. Eventually they decide on the name Mazuli: a combination of their RL name and the names of their two beloved cats. 23 years earlier, Mazuli chose their first online handle in a similar manner-- mixing their birth name with that of their male best friend to create an androgynous name. This early online identity was Mazuli's first taste of an existence separate from gender.

For the past 2 years, Mazuli's home on LambdaMOO has been an unfurnished room named "Cave Temple" with a single line of description: You find yourself in a large limestone cave. Mazuli had ambitious plans for the room, but after typing the @dig command to create it they found themselves unable to think of anything to write. Mazuli's visits to the MOO over the past 2 years have been sporadic, but they've began to visit regularly again, and as such, sleeping in a sparse and uncomfortable cave will no longer do. Mazuli begins working on a new, more comfortable room, not unlike the one you are in right now.
